Of the many new and expanded federal funding opportunities for building a more equitable and sustainable New Orleans, Reconnecting Communities may be the most well-known. President Biden, Secretary Buttigieg and Congressman Troy Carter have all lifted up this program and New Orleans as an example of it's potential to repair historic injustices caused in cases when insfrastructure has been used to divide communities.
In the lead up to the application deadline for the Reconnecting Communities Pilot Program, the Claiborne Avenue overpass has garnered attention as the most profound and historic landmark of the kind of injustice the program is designed to address. In this event, we will update with the latest about these projects.
We will also provide a broader look at the transportation infrastructure that divides communities across New Orleans - from railyards, to canals, to highways - our city is full of man-made barriers to how we move and gather as residents and communities. Further opportunities exist for residents and stakeholders to pursue Reconnecting Communities funding in the years to come.
