Building Resilience to Climate Impacts Into Local Streets & Evacuation Routes

December 7th, 2022

Hosted by Son Of A Saint

This installment of Building Our Future: Citywide Conversations is focused on PROTECT - a federal program for building resilience into local streets and transportation systems to combat the impacts of climate change. PROTECT can fund projects to combat sea level rise, flooding, extreme weather events, and other natural disasters through support of planning activities, resilience improvements, evacuation routes, and at-risk coastal infrastructure.

- Featured presenters -

“We can’t take for granted that new infrastructure will be resilient infrastructure. We need to be intentional about mitigating risks to infrastructure that not only exist today but also those that may arise in the future.”

The risks to our communities and ways of life cannot be overstated, and addressing them will require a thoughtful, ongoing, and multi-disciplinary approach.

Traditional boundaries between fields such as planning, engineering, and community advocacy will need to be removed.

Tom and planners at the RPC are utilizing tools like these to build equity into current and future transportation infrastructure. What's important is investing in people and communities: building shared knowledge and stories, establishing common values and ethics, and supporting collective decision making and environmental stewardship.

Committee for a Better New Orleans is partnering with ISeeChange & Healthy Gulf to document residents’ infrastructure needs, to make sure your perspective can help local leaders prioritize where and how to build a more equitable and sustainable future.

Is there infrastructure in your neighborhood that prevents you from safely leaving during climate events?
